I tried to keep this update short, but for those who don’t have the time to read this whole article or my future updates there is a very important preface that needs to be read.

First - God is good all the time. If you are waiting and praying about something. Don’t quit. There are too many Bible verses that make it clear we need to continue in prayer.

Second - Look at your prayer list. Do any of the things there require faith? If not, you may want to rewrite or expand it to grow spiritually and see just how great your God is.

Third - As I write about the events of the past month or so, I am so thankful for the people God has put in my path to help me. I am forever indebted to Chad and Linda Phillips and Rodney and Rebecca Ruppel for the hospitality and assistance that they have provided over the past weeks.

Update From Cambodia - July 2013

The Week before leaving -

I have been in Cambodia now for over one month. It has been a blur so far and that will probably continue to be the case over the next month or two. Several folks have been asking, so I did want to write an update to share the great things the Lord has shown me over the past several weeks. While this will be a shortened version of the events that have transpired, let me say that I am hoping to write something more in depth later. God has been so good to me, and my friends and family so encouraging, I want to share as much as I can how my heavenly Father has shown me the next steps for my “path of life”. (Psalm 16:11)

My flight to Cambodia was on a Monday and I was able to spend the week before that being encouraged by my family, friends, and church. I had some great meals with family and friends, and was able to enjoy some extra time with them. On Sunday morning I was able to say goodbye’s to my friends in my Sunday School class and on my bus route. The most memorable thing that happened though was on Sunday evening after church. My mom and aunts had set up some refreshments in the lower level of the church. There I was encouraged by the many folks who stopped by to say goodbye. I am so thankful to have been a part of Victory Baptist Church in Loganville, Georgia for over 20 years and I can’t wait to get back.

Week 1-

My flight to Cambodia was not as bad as I was anticipating. It was 28 hours of travel, but in the end it was all worth it. As I arrived at the airport I was greeted by a group of folks, including the one I came for, Theary. This was a special moment for several reasons, and reality set in that I was in Cambodia with my future wife. (Proverbs 13:12)

On Wednesday, I was able to visit Theary’s church and then the Phillips church on Thursday night. On Saturday, I was able to go to the Olympic Stadium with Theary and the Ruppel kids, Blake and Dee Dee, to watch a soccer game. This would prove to be a very important activity, as I was able to scout out a spot to get engaged.

Week 2-

The next Monday was probably the greatest day of my life. Theary works with the Phillips family on weekdays, so Monday morning she came there as usual. What she didn’t know is that Chad & Linda, Dee Dee, and I had come up with a special plan. We had a Tuk-Tuk ready to go when Theary came to the Phillips and I was able to take her out for a special day. I didn’t tell her where we were going, but she soon realized that we were headed back to the Stadium. However, since we had Dee Dee with us, I told her it was because I really like the Stadium and I wanted to get a good picture with her. As we got to the top of the Stadium steps, I tried to find the ring in my pocket. For some reason it felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. There was a split second of panic, but then I found the small ring in a fold of my wallet. So once I had it in hand, I told Theary where to stand for the picture, and made sure Dee Dee was ready, I popped the question “Will you marry me?” And she said “Yes”.

We then went to the Palace lawn to feed the birds and then a nice restaurant for a meal. The smile on Theary’s face was worth everything. It was truly a special day. And a special thanks to Dee Dee Ruppel for taking some great pics.

Week 3-

I was not sure what to expect the week of the 4th of July in Cambodia. Over the years it has always been a fun week leading up to some sort of party or cookout with family and friends. This week started out with busywork and gathering paperwork. Also, an elderly Cambodian man who was a faithful member of one of the churches here passed away. I was able to attend both the funeral service and burial service. It was amazing to see the turnout of Christian brothers and sisters, and then to hear about his testimony. Though I was not able to understand much, it was very clear that he loved the Lord and loved his wife. He even wrote a final love letter to her which was read at the funeral. It was a very unique experience, and it was a great opportunity to see God working in Cambodia.

On the Fourth of July, I was able to go have a fun day with Theary. We got to go for a boat ride on the Mekong River, eat at a Mexican restaurant, and believe it or not I got a Kit Kat Blizzard from Dairy Queen!

On Saturday night of this week I was able to go out to Theary’s village where she lives, and where she grew up. Almost all of my time here in Cambodia has been spent in the loud, bustling city of Phnom Penh or in the smaller, but busy neighborhoods of Ta Khmao. Going out to the villages is a completely different experience, especially when you are going to meet your future family members! The drive out to her village is on a long dusty ride that went through both busy little towns and vast open farmland. It is a much different feeling when taking in the beautiful scenery and quiet surroundings. Once we arrived at Theary’s house, i was in for an experience that I will never forget. Many of Theary’s family and several friends and neighbors were there. After greeting them as best I could, I got a tour of their yard and the house I have heard so much about. Perhaps I can share more later, but basically Theary’s old house was not a very safe structure for their family to live due to termites and other factors. Even though this was the case, Theary gave sacrificially to the new building fund at her church. When this story was shared by Bro. Ruppel when home on furlough, some were impressed to have a better house built for Theary and her family. This is just a part of the story, and just one of the many stories that makes Theary’s testimony so wonderful. But back to the special night, there was a special dinner prepared and Theary and I got to eat by candle light in the middle of their yard. It was an awesome experience.

On the ride home, i was able to enjoy the darkest sky that I have ever seen. The stars seem even more beautiful when stretched out on a solid black canvas. I was also able to reflect on God’s goodness. His word had somehow reached this village in the middle of Cambodia to bring salvation to many, including Theary, my soon to be wife. It is hard to comprehend in my simple mind, but it is times like this when I realize how great it is to serve an omniscient God, who has a special plan for even me.

So that is the first few weeks. This story is To Be Continued……, so please stay tuned. I will get you another update as soon as I can. Please be praying for me as I continue to ask God’s help for some really big things.

I just recently found out that Andrew Garcia is in the process of starting a new video project - “The Lighthouse”, and you can help him “Kickstart” the project. If you are not familiar with Andrew Garcia, in 2011 he released a full length documentary about the Wells family and their ministry in Papua New Guinea called “Two Hats”. (I wrote about how I learned about it - here). You can get more information about “The Lighthouse” film in the link below, but the site describes it as “A dramatic tale of fatherhood, relationships and dedication based on the story of The Prodigal Son in Luke 15”. If its half as good as “Two Hats” then it will be worth watching!

Andrew has created a Kickstarter to help fund this project, and their is only about 24 hours left until it closes. I would encourage anyone who is a fan of quality Christian entertainment to check it out and consider donating to the Kickstarter fund. Kickstarter.com is a creative new fundraising website that allows you to be a “backer” for a particular project. The originator of each project is required to give you certain details about what the project entails and there is a deadline for monies to be raised. If the amount required is raised then the project is officially started and the originator gets all of the donations that have been raised for the project. Really pretty cool! The Lighthouse has already reached it’s amount required, but I would encourage you to help out with this worthy project. Also, if you donate at least $25, you will get a copy of the film before its official release. Check it out!

I know many folks read one or two of my blog posts back in November and December about my trip to Cambodia. (see Here) Honestly, I think I had more blog traffic those few weeks than all other weeks combined. It was a great experience and on top of that, it was a great opportunity to work on a very special project. In what has been a whirlwind of a last few months I am finally finished with my first major video project “The Phillips Family - Our Ministry in Cambodia 2011 to Present”

Several have already viewed it, but I did want to share this with all of my Facebook pals. Enjoy!

I also want to take a minute to thank my friend Chad Phillips for this opportunity; both professionally and personally. Last October I never would have dreamed I would make a trip to Cambodia, observe the wonderful work the Lord is doing there, and then make a video about it before the year concluded. It is very humbling. Also, It was truly amazing to witness how the Lord is using Chad and Linda in Cambodia, and to see their great love for the people. The Lord showed me so many things during my stay, and he has shown me even more since my return.

Thank you Chad. Thank you Linda. I pray the Lord will bless your short time here in the states, and that your joy of serving the Lord will inspire others to serve him as well.

If you kept up with my recent Cambodia Trip posts you know that I had the wonderful opportunity to visit my friend Chad and his family where they serve in Ta Khmao, Cambodia. The purpose of that visit was for Chad and I to work on a video report for his upcoming furlough trip home. (see Here) Well I am glad to say that It was great to see the Phillips family again tonight, as they have finally made it back to Georgia. Seeing how they will be able to be home in Loganville for Christmas and the new year, i thought it would be good to introduce each of them to those members of Victory Baptist Church who have not met them yet. Here are some pics that I got on my trip. I hope that they will help you get to know and remember the Phillips family.

First up is Chad and Linda

Their oldest Child is Elizabeth. She is 4 years old. Whether she was singing a song, or giggling at something funny, I truly enjoyed seeing her joyful spirit each day of my stay with the Phillips.

Next is Judson who is 3 years old. I think the word that best describes him is “Imaginative”. Just look at the pictures, need I say more. I can just picture the thought cloud hovering over his head with some crazy story or stunt he is thinking up. haha, Judson is definitely a lot of fun to be around.

Last is the little girl that many of us have prayed so much for. After just getting to Cambodia and some potential pregnancy complications coming up, the Phillips had to head to Thailand. Emily Faith Phillips, “Bundle”, was born 16 months ago in Thailand, healthy and strong. You can read more about her name here. Even at this young of an age I could already see some of her personality through her many facial expressions. On more than one occasion I would be passing by her playpen and see her giving me a look with her dark brown eyes saying, “you don’t have to pick me up and carry me around if you don’t want to, but I sure would appreciate it.” haha, how can one resist?

On Monday, my departing flight was not until late that night, so we were able to take advantage of the full day. In the morning we did some final work on the video and then headed out for lunch. We headed toward the riverside area and were planning a boat ride. This is a very scenic stretch which included the former King’s Royal Palace and a row of national flags. Chad told me that just about a week before this area was flooded with Cambodians and visitors mourning the recent death of King Sihanouk. (More info Here) About the boat trip, Chad had mentioned how they had done this a few times before. We would show up on the docks and a bidding war would begin as the boat drivers competed to see who give us a ride. Much to my dismay, it did not go down like this. haha! Apparently, there had been too many altercations with the boat drivers recently, so the process was made to be much more civilized.

The boat ride was awesome. When you get a boat, it’s just for you and your party, so it’s very fun and relaxing. On the ride we got to see a fishing village on a nearby island, and also a beautiful view of the Phnom Penh skyline from the river. All of this was the backdrop for our lunch from “the Pizza Company” and a few friendly (sometimes) games of Rummikub.

Ok so these next posts are over a week late, but better late than never. On my last days in Cambodia, last Sunday and Monday, there were several things that I thought readers would find interesting.

On Sunday morning we headed back to Good News Baptist Church in Phnom Penh. This was a special time for the Phillips family. Since they have moved to Ta Khmao, and are headed to the States for furlough, it was their last time to see many of these folks for a while. They lived and served here at the church for most of their first 2 years in Cambodia so the church members were glad to see them before their trip. We had a great Sunday School hour as Missionary Stephen Benefield led some music and singing for us to use for Chad’s video. The AM service was good also, but since I don’t understand the language I was forced to sit in the back and make faces at Emily. This was quite entertaining as you can see.

The Benefield family has a wonderful family and ministry here in Cambodia. It was a great pleasure to meet them as I had heard so much about them from Chad. I had a wonderful time with them on Thanksgiving Day as well - they let me crash their party, complete with Turkey, stuffing, and all the fixins’. In the services that I was able to attend there, it was obvious that the people have the joy of the Lord, and are stirred by the messages. The Lord is really using them here in the capitol city; please pray that the Lord will continue to bless the Benefield family and Good News Baptist Church.

On Sunday night, we just had a few minutes walk to Liberty Baptist Church, which is just around the corner from Chad’s house. It was great to see the Shull family, pastors Proh and Toh, as well as the church members one last time. We had a great service, and little while to fellowship before we had to head back home. It was great to talk to some Cambodian teenagers as well. Some of them were working on trying to go on a special trip - all they had to do to go was memorize the book of Phillipians!

Last Friday was also a great day. We got together with some families from the church the Phillips family will be assisting when they return from furlough. First we took some family pics and then headed out on visitation. Here is the Phillips family along with their friend and helper, Theary. Also, there is a pic with the family of Proh and Toh with the city of Phnom Penh in the far distance. These men and their families have been a joy to get to know over my time here. It is great to see the joy of the Lord in their hearts as they serve here in Ta Khmao.

During visitation I was introduced to a Cambodian treat, Sugar Cane Juice. At first I was hesitant to take a sip from a yellow bag, but it turned out to be quite refreshing. Should you ever find a yellow bag in the United States, I would not suggest consuming the contents. However, should you have opportunity to get yourself some fresh sugar cane juice, I can heartily recommend it!

Village Ministry

Probably the greatest day that I have had so far here in Cambodia, was on Wednesday. Chad and I headed out early in the morning for their “Village Ministry”. About 2 hours outside of the city is a farming town, Kampot, where they have a faithful group of people that come together on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The trip out of the city into the countryside of Cambodia revealed a completely new perspective of the country for me. While the city is busy and fast paced, the farming communities outside the city run at a more peaceful pace. Not only was I able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on this trip, but also the wonderful service that we had.

On Wednesday evening, we headed back into Phnom Penh for a service at Good News Baptist Church. There were also several other churches coming for this special service and we really packed out the auditorium. There was singing, a testimony time, and a message by Pastor Benefield. All this was followed by some food and fellowship afterwards. While I had no idea what was being said in the service, I was able to recognize some of the tunes and join in English. It was a wonderful service!

After that I got to meet Hawn, Chad’s language teacher. Instead of a normal class, Chad decided to take a field trip to one of the Prison camps during the Khmer Rouge - Tuol Sleng, also know as S-21, which is now a memorial museum. Chad did try to get some work done on the Tuk Tuk ride.

The tour of Tuol Sleng was very sobering, and really the saddest sight I have ever seen. It used to be a Primary and High School in Phnom Penh but was turned into a prison and torture chamber during the Khmer Rouge. The things that come to mind when I think of torture are nothing compared to the things that were shown in this museum. This was far beyond the violence of war and really the most disturbing thing I have witnessed in my lifetime. What makes it even more impactful is that this is still in the heart of the city, it is only one of many of these camps, and that this happened just over 30 years ago. Below are some pictures of the camp. These do not show the terrible story of this camp, but for this audience I have tried to include only pictures that anyone can view. Hawn and our tour guide are the others in the pictures. This was Hawn’s first time going to this camp, it was very sobering for him as well.

Also in the pics is one of the seven survivors who was selling his book at the museum, Chum Mey. Of over 12,000 prisoners, he was one of the few who lived to tell the story.

This is a view from inside the rooms. You see 3 brick cells on the right. Each of these rooms were filled with several of these tiny cells where the prisoners stayed. The pieces of writing that you see on the wall at the top was lettering that remained from the school.

We stopped by Chad’s old house in Phnom Penh. Good News Baptist Church is the building on the right. We will be having a special service here on Wed. night with several other churches coming. I am really looking forward to it.

When the Phillips were here, they had to install that fence around the upstairs that you see. Monkeys would get in that tree and come up on their porch. hahah!

Sunday, we headed out to church at Liberty Baptist Church in Ta Khmao, Cambodia. This will be the church that Chad is working at in the future, and where he lives now. Thought you would enjoy hearing a classic Hymn in the Khmer language - can you guess the tune? Also, Here is a vid of our Tuk Tuk ride home. He lives just a few blocks from the church.

Well after over 20 hours on an airplane, I made it to Cambodia.

Thanks to Jason King and Travis Birge which dropped me off at the airport on Thursday morning. I landed in Cambodia last night around 11PM their time.

I was right by the wing on the plane trip leaving Atlanta, so here is a time-lapse vid of the takeoff. Also, Chad and Linda got some pics of the kids as they waited for me at the Phnom Penh airport. They were easy to find since they were the only group with Braves clothing. haha! The kids showed me how to do the Tomahawk chop on the van ride to their house. You will have to get them to show you when the come to Georgia.

I am going to try to be putting up a post every few days, so Be sure to check back for more updates during the next couple weeks.

As I mentioned in my last post, I am headed to Cambodia later this month. It turns out that I am not the only one going on a journey to the Far East!

One of the best things about my time Freelancing is the opportunities I have had to work on some very special projects. What seems like forever ago, a member of my church Crystal Young, asked me if I could help them create a family video. She explained to me that they had been doing the preliminary work for adopting a child overseas, and one of the things the agencies like to have is a video showing the family and home. I told her I would help as much as I could and to let me know if things worked out. Well, praise the Lord, earlier this year things finally worked out. In June, Mr. Jason and Mrs. Crystal let me know that everything was moving along with the adoption process and that they were ready to make a video. The next addition to the Young Family would be a little 4 year old girl named Sunny May!

We set aside a day to get some video which included some personal greetings and a tour of the house. I have known the Young family for quite some time, but being in their home I was able to see how special they really are. Jason and Crystal are great parents to an amazing group of kids already. Shelby, Malachi, and Cody each have their unique characteristics and it’s fun to see them interact. I can’t wait to see how it will be when SunnyMay joins the party!

Here are some shots of the vid:

In August I finished up editing “The Young Family” video and got them a DVD. This was my first time working on a project like that so I was unsure if I was satisfied with how it turned out. It accomplished the criteria that the adoption agency requested, but this being such a special event I really wanted it to be great. At the end of the month Mrs. Crystal forwarded me an email that made me feel like a million dollars. It was titled “Update on Sunny May”. Crystal included a message that said this:

Here is a Note from worker at Mothers Choice:

Well the Young Family is on their way to Hong Kong now to pick up their newest addition, SunnyMay! Please be praying for their traveling safety and that their adoption procedures in Hong Kong go very smooth. I am looking forward to meeting SunnyMay in person and to seeing the growing Young family - Party of 6!

One of my best pals, Chad Phillips, is a missionary in Cambodia. He and his family have been working working at Good News Baptist Church in Phnom Penh for almost 2 years now, and it is amazing to see how the Lord has blessed their ministry. I have often thought about trying to go and visit, and Chad and I had even mentioned the idea a few times, but no serious plans were ever made. That is - until the past couple of months!

About 5 weeks ago, I got a call from Chad telling me about some adjustments they were making to their furlough plans. They had an exciting ministry opportunity that would be coming about next summer, so they were going to reschedule their trip home before that date. Chad also began telling me about a project he wanted to do before he came home, and he wanted me to help him out. He was wanting to make a short video to kind of show his life and ministry there in Cambodia during their first term. Somehow in a few minutes he had talked me into trying to get to Cambodia ASAP and get this done.

Well, we worked out the details. I got my Passport and Plane tickets (which include 20 hours in the air, ughh!), I cleared my calendar during Thanksgiving (Turkey diet), and very soon I will be heading to Cambodia.

I am very excited about this opportunity, and humbled as well. Six weeks ago I never would have imagined that this would be possible. Please pray that the Lord would help me and protect me on this trip and that He will bless the work we do.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Cambodia Packages!

As we began to see the details come together that I would be able to go to Cambodia, I decided that I wanted to do a fundraiser to help pay for my trip and project. Chad was already working on some new things including a new website. I thought what better way to do a Cambodia trip fundraiser than to create a promotional packet to help promote this. Over the past few weeks I have ordered and created a few items and put them together into a cool Cambodia packet. I got a Pray for Cambodia T-Shirt made complete with Chad’s new website on it. There is also a wristband with the new website on it. I made a vinyl decal that you can put on your car or mirror to help you remember Cambodia. And finally, I made a tag to go along with the package. It has a picture of the Phillips family and some other info. What’s awesome is that my family members put all of these items together for me in a cool looking bundle! Check it out.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Living Fields

Lastly today, I wanted to mention Chad’s new website. It is not complete yet, but you can check it out at www.living-fields.com.

The name he chose for his website is very significant. A quick Google search of Cambodia will show you why. Probably the most notable event in their recent history is the brutal Khmer Rouge regime which ruled from 1975 to 1979. Thousands were murdered and even more died of disease and starvation. There are several burial sites within Cambodia that are simply know as “The Killing Fields.” While this is just a history lesson to most people, it is still very real in the minds of most Cambodians, including Chad and Linda’s family members.

The things associated with “The Killing Fields” makes the name of Chad’s new website overwhelmingly powerful. The darkness and death that came in Cambodia’s past will give way to the light and life that the Gospel brings to the Cambodian people. With Christ and laborers like my pal Chad, the future of Cambodia is “The Living Fields”.

I have had several pals asking me about using Dropbox lately, so I thought I would do a quick Blog post on my workflow for sending files on a Mac. At the end I will give some more info on why Dropbox is so very awesome, and why you need to sign up for a free account (Here) if you haven’t already. (Let me know if you would like to set up an account - if you refer a new user with Dropbox, both parties get an extra 500MB of storage.) Also, I have some cool Dropbox quick facts that may surprise you.

OK, So lets get started. Assuming you already have a Dropbox account setup, I am going to share with you the best way to send stuff quickly and safely over the inter-web. Most people just create a New Folder on their Dropbox account and then share that folder with other people via email invitation. While this is great for collaborative projects with several parties, it is not the best option if you just want to send some files.

For this example - Let’s say I took a bunch of Pics at a family get together, and I want to get everyone hi-res versions of them.

Why “Sharing Folders” is a Bad Habit

First of all, (this Is probably just a personal issue) I am a minimalist. Or at least I pretend to be, haha! Anyway, if you use Dropbox a lot, and you create and share a new folder for everything, you will quickly clutter up your Dropbox account. For example, If I took pics at several different family events I would find myself “Sharing” several different Dropbox folders, or with one big unorganized “Family” folder. Eventually, I would have a large mess on my hands. Also, I don’t want pictures from 5 years ago using up my free storage space on Dropbox.

Second, and more importantly, is Safety. Lets say you are sharing a folder with someone, and they get the files they need. Did you know that they will have access to that folder until you delete it? You may have worked on the project several months ago, forgotten about the folder, and then use it for something else. Everyone that was ever sharing that folder has continued access to that folder. Or let’s say you have several different shared folders, and in a hurry - or accidentally - you drop a very sensitive file into the wrong folder. Again, everyone will have access to that in your shared folder. With the Family get together example, Let’s just say Uncle Carl and Aunt Kate aren’t married any more. You don’t want to be sending him pics of “Uncle Jeff and Aunt Kate”. hahah!

Third, some files are just a pain. For example Video files. I have come to find that these are a real pain to send via Dropbox shared folders. The main thing is that Dropbox tries to play the video through your browser. If your Granny doesn’t have a really good internet connection, playback will be choppy and slow. And then she will complain to you about how her computer doesn’t work. Am I right or what?!

A Better (and Easier) Alternative - the Public Folder

(NOTE: If you do not see a “Public Folder”, you may have accidentally deleted it. No prob! just create a new folder and name it “Public”.)

Send compressed .ZIP files to your relatives, or anyone, following these steps. They don’t even need to have a Dropbox account.

Step 1:

Create a new folder on your desktop and name it “GrannysHouse_10.4.2012”

Step 2:

Put all the files inside that you want to share with people. Pictures, Videos, Documents, etc., etc.

Step 3:

Compress your folder into a .ZIP file (just right click and choose “Compress”)

Step 4:

Put the newly created .ZIP file into your Dropbox “Public” folder

Step 5:

You will see the blue spinning arrows, as the .ZIP file is uploading. When it turns into a green check you are ready to send a link.

Just right click on the .Zip file and choose “Copy Public Link”. Now you can go to your email and hit paste in the memo area. You will see a URL link to that Zip file.

Now you can send that email to anyone you want and they just need to click the link to download the Zip file. When they do download it, all they have to do is double click to uncompress the zip file back into a normal folder, full of all the goodies you wanted them to have.

Also, on your end, organization of your Public folder is quick and easy if you name your .zip files descriptively and delete files that are old.

Is DropBox King of the Cloud?

This is just one scenario, but I have found this process is great pretty much anytime I need to send large files quickly and easily. I worked in the Printing industry for years and have had to deal with the frustration of trying to send and receive large files. Logging onto FTP sites, passwords, file size limitations, etc, etc, all made the process a major headache. The need for Apps like DropBox is great and will only continue to grow. That being said, since I have been using DropBox other file storage and sharing Apps have been popping up like weeds. Some of them are startups like DropBox, but others are from companies you may have already heard of Google, Apple, or Microsoft. hahah! So yeah, the need for sending files through clouds is an ever changing market that has really just begun. I have very limited use with the others, so I can’t really make any suggestions about these apps. If you do a quick Google search like “DropBox alternatives”, you will find an abundance of comparisons between the major Apps. Some of the more popular ones are Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, Apple iCloud, Sugar Sync. Each offer similar services, but you may find one that fits your exact needs.

While I may change my mind in the future, the simplicity of Dropbox makes it an easy choice. The scenario I mentioned above cannot get any simpler, and it’s easy for computer beginners, like “Granny”, to just get the stuff they want.

Quick DropBox facts:

This is not a political blog, nor do I intend to make it one. That being said, I do want to mention some news from last week that I feel will go unnoticed by most conservative, creative folks out there. The company Hobby Lobby, based in Oklahoma City, OK has come under fire for their stance against the White House’s HHS mandate (Health & Human Services). Hobby Lobby’s CEO and founder David Green is a Christian. Last week he said in a statement, "We simply cannot abandon our religious beliefs to comply with this mandate”, and “With great reluctance” followed with a federal lawsuit challenging the mandate. So what is the big deal about this healthcare mandate? Part of the White House’s recent heath care law requires employers to provide coverage for the morning-after pill and similar drugs that may cause the end of a life. Green also states, “It goes against the biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million per day in government fines.” This will begin January 2013 when the insurance year starts.

As you can probably imagine, this has stirred debate about Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice, with some mentioning boycotts of Hobby Lobby. I have read some articles and comments concerning boycotts and am quite surprised at some of the viewpoints. Here is one example. I also find it disconcerting, that in the quest for Pro-Choice laws and regulations, many of these commenters don’t seem to realize that this healthcare mandate is being forced upon some U.S. citizens who do not wish to participate. Can you really justify a boycott because Hobby Lobby doesn’t want to participate in buying some of these drugs that go against their values? On a much less important note, it seems that several of the boycott comments are rather partisan, and simply showing irritation toward “selfish” conservatives. I would submit to those individuals David Green’s statement. He mentions that Hobby Lobby has been adding jobs during this weak economy, starts full-time employees 80% above minimum wage, and is closed on Sundays so workers can spend time with family. With all of these things considered, I think that Hobby Lobby would be one of the last places that U.S. citizens would wish to boycott.

The 40 year history of Hobby Lobby is a pretty amazing story, and David Green is quick to praise the Lord for the store’s success. I hope you will take the time to read his statement concerning Hobby Lobby’s actions. It’s only a few paragraphs. The links for this and other articles I have referenced are at the bottom of this post.

I never knew that Hobby Lobby was owned by a Christian until a few years back. When strolling through the aisles, I recognized the music coming from the speakers. It was classical guitarist Christopher Parkening who is a Christian. I was able to hear Parkening play in concert as well as hear his testimony when I was In college. Truly amazing music! (Parkening is a world renowned guitarist, and actually just retired this summer. Check out his website here.) Anyway, hearing a Christian artist in the store surprised me, and since then I have been a huge fan of Hobby Lobby.

So to those that are Christian creatives, I would ask that you make it a point to add Hobby Lobby to your next shopping list. Not only is it a really cool place to find art stuff, it is also a company that is run on biblical principals. To be honest, Hobby Lobby’s stance on the White House’s Health and Human Services mandate is ancillary. I will conclude with one more quote from David Green’s statement which will summarize why I am “Lobbying for Hobby Lobby”.

“We're Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I've always said that the first two goals of our business are 1) to run our business in harmony with God's laws, and 2) to focus on people more than money.” - David Green
If you haven’t seen the recent Old Spice commercials, you are missing out. (See some of them here) They are 30 second mix of ridiculous, masculine scenes with tough guys in crazy scenarios. When watching them, I find myself in an awkward state of confusion and uncontrollable laughter.

The other day I stumbled upon another Old Spice advertisement, but this one was a little bit different. This one was on STEROIDS!!! It is musical, interactive and hilarious! Somehow they Old Spice folks have harnessed the power of Vimeo and created an interactive beatbox setup on a video they created. You can click the link or the picture above to check it out. When it get’s to the end Terry Crews will give you some instructions on how to play the musical sounds. HaHa!

I recently finished another business card / prayer card project for my good friend Dallas Brown. Dallas is going to be heading to Africa in September for a six month adventure. He is going to be assisting one of our missionary friends from Victory Baptist Church, Keith Shumaker in Burkina Faso, West Africa. It has been a great joy to get to know Dallas over the past several years, and to see him develop into a great leader. He is truly a special individual and a nonpareil servant. He has a special heart for missions, and has been working like crazy to save up for this trip to Africa. Also, his work at Victory is invaluable, and he will be missed. I hope you will subscribe to his blog (Here) as well as consider helping him both prayerfully and financially.

OK, OK, enough of the sentimental thoughts. In this Adios post, i really wanted to reflect on my personal experiences with Dallas, and show everyone how vital he has been to many of our projects at Victory Baptist Church. You see, Dallas Brown is probably the funniest, most talented, and craziest person I have ever met. Whenever we have an idea for a new skit or video, most of the time it involves Dallas doing some silly stunt or making a fool of himself. (Which he is always happy to do) It has been said that Dallas would be a perfect act with a circus or fair. He is adroit, adept, and able to learn about anything. I have seen him do a rubik’s cube in under a minute, ride a unicycle along a cliff, and juggle knives in a church service, just to list a few things on his resume. And I wouldn’t doubt if he could do all these at the same time, haha!

So I had this idea. What better way to send Dallas off than with a Dallas Brown Top 5 moments list. Here are my 5 favorite pictures or screenshots from projects working with Dallas. I hope you enjoy them. I will post some links to the videos at the end as well as a special SURPRISE!!!

These are a few of the reasons why Dallas Brown is so …….. special. hahah! Several of these images were captured as part of video projects we were working on. If you would like to see some of these videos, I have a surprise for you! In my last blog post (see here) I showed a few of our Missions Conference commercials and behind the scenes videos and mentioned a new project that I may try to work on. We have created many videos at Victory Baptist Church over the years and many people often ask me, “Hey, do you still have ___ video somewhere?” Well as of today, Vics Video Vault is under construction! And i figured what better way to celebrate Dallas than uploading several Dallas Brown videos for you to enjoy. Click the link or pic below to check it out, and stay tuned for more videos from the Victory archives!

This weekend we will be having our annual Missions Conference at Victory Baptist Church in Loganville, GA. Like many of the events at Victory, we had a request for a “funny video” to use for the conference. The video below is what we came up with. We tried to make it like the DirecTV commercials where the announcer guy strings together a list of cause and effects. My favorite is the “Don’t have a grandson with a dog collar” one. (See Here)

We had some other things in the works, but they did not end up getting used. I wanted to try to make a commercial similar to the “Confidence” Cars.com commercials. (See Here) I have been playing around with my video production capabilities, and was wanting to try some chromakey or “green screen” projects. This was a good excuse to see what we could do. The basic idea for the commercial was to have a missionary on deputation, deciding whether or not to buy a car. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish putting it all together, but I thought you may enjoy seeing the rough draft. Much thanks to my pals Jason King, Chris Waye, and his son Lawson Waye. Lawson is the one who inspired this idea, because the Cars.com commercial is his favorite. Here it is below.

Also, I was working on my first motion graphic project using Apple’s Motion 5. In our print and web promotions for the 2012 Missions Conference we had a world map with arrows coming out of Georgia going to locations in the world. I made a motion graphic of this as well, to be part of an intro to the conference. After a lot of trial and error, I was pleased with the final result, check it out below.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that I have had several requests to watch the different church videos we have made over the years. From teen allnighter promos to church skits - these are hilarious. Some are on my Facebook video page, but they often won’t load or are low quality. So, I have been pondering gathering them all and putting them in a single location. If you would like to happen let me know. There are several videos, each in different locations, different formats, etc. so it would take some time to gather. But if folks want to watch them, it would be worth it to compile these. Let me know!
Vichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02039792294102037960noreply@blogger.com1Loganville, GA 30052, USA33.802681199999988 -83.91089680000004633.708697699999988 -84.012568300000041 33.896664699999988 -83.809225300000051tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-693747560252592336.post-57271927264233469352012-07-09T15:13:00.002-04:002012-09-19T10:11:53.902-04:00The Infographic - Marriage between the Graphic Designer and Stat Monkey

I recently wrote a blog about an interesting graphic I saw in an article about iPad sales. (See Here) They took a bunch of information from a survey about iPads and created a visual chart of sorts to show the results. Apparently, these guys were just jumping on the bandwagon.

Over the course of the last week or so, I have had multiple exposures to the latest design trend……. The Infographic. Yes, thats right, it’s the latest art form. haha! Text creatively mixed with visuals is nothing new to advertising, we see it everyday. However, The Infographic, blends fact nuggets with related icons or images to create something very interesting. Say you have an advertisement showing numbers and stats. This is usually considered very boring and dull, but with a little bit of creative design, viewers are captivated by what they see. Instead of dismissing this information, they are actually entertained and mesmerized. Amazing!

Since I am a sports ‘o holic, when I hear the word “Stat” or “Statistics” my mind immediately goes to sports, especially Major League Baseball. Since baseball has been around forever and the rules largely unchanged, both old and current stats are comparable. That being the case, baseball statistics are very popular and often talked about. In fact, you probably can’t watch one episode of SportsCenter without hearing some ridiculous baseball stat that only the aforementioned Stat Monkey could come up with. Heard of the the recent film Moneyball starring Brad Pitt? It was based on a true story all about statistics and how they effected the game. Also, I recently read an article during the NBA playoffs, that shared how some tech savvy coaches were using statistical heat maps to help prepare their teams defensively. (image above & Link) Images were created (similar to a Doppler Radar) to show where the apposing teams were shooting higher percentages. The coaches then could help their players defend the oppositions “Hot Spots”. Stats do lend themselves to sports, but are expanding into other interesting advertising avenues.

So, text and letters be aware! Numbers are trending in the advertising world. If you want to see some of this in action, I recently found the infographic jackpot. www.InfoGraphicWorld.com While admittedly, it was sports articles from ESPN.com that led me here, I was surprised at the variety of corporations that are using them. After looking at several of them, I realized how effective info graphics can actually be. When you get done reading a good one, you feel like you have learned something. I found myself reading an info graphic that was comparing 5 other info graphics to see which was the best - and I was enjoying it! hahah!

So what does all of this have to do with you? Im just warning you. If you are a commercial/advertising nerd (like myself) be prepared to see a lot of stats, but be prepared to like them.

Last week I had the great opportunity to help out at Camp Victory 2012. One of my jobs was to get some pics and vids each day, and then prepare a short highlight video for the kids to watch the following morning. From the field and water games to the singing and preaching, I got several opportunities to practice my camera skills. Lots of fun. Here are the vids below. Be sure to click the option to watch in HD if you’ve got the bandwidth. The quality is way better.

The War is one of our biggest events at Victory Baptist Church, so we always try to bring our A-Game. Earlier in the year when we were planning out the event, we wanted to do some creative promo videos again this year. This was the final straw In my decision to upgrade some equipment. My current setup for video was severely lacking, especially when it came to High Definition. After much debate I took the plunge on Final Cut Pro X, which deserves a whole blog article in its own right. I also upgraded my Canon DSLR to a T2i so I could get some HD video. And so the War at Victory 2012 Commercials began.

We released the first Commercial, “Gone Fishin”, two weeks before the event started on May 10th, as well as a movie trailer with a few clips from last year. A week later Commercial 2 , “The Basement”, followed and finally Commercial 3, “It’s Here”, on the morning of the event. As I mentioned in the Part 1 blog they were a success, they have been viewed over 1,000 times. Surprisingly, the Gone Fishin ad seemed to get the most response from people. It was funny because I really struggled a lot with that one. It all made sense when I was sketching out a script and shooting the video. But when I started editing it, it didn’t seem to make sense anymore. A guy goes fishing and some stranger pops out of the water, now what does that have to do with the War? After a lot of time and Mountain Dew it all seemed to work out. These seem to be the solution for many a creative problem, hahah!

A ton of thanks goes out to folks who helped out with the commercials, especially Dallas Brown and John Higgins. They did a great job and I am sure that their acting careers will continue to blossom.

Next, was the event videos themselves. This is my number one job during the War. I’ve got to get as many good video clips on the website as quick as possible. The goal is to have these video clips up for the kids to view as soon as each night finishes up. Then by the next morning, I try to have an edited highlight video finished. This is not an easy task, and fortunately I was able to get one of my best pals to help me this year. A huge thanks to Chris Waye. He got tons of great video, mastered the Youtube upload, and put up with me yelling at him every night. His assistance allowed me to concentrate on the slideshows and website updates, and it wouldn’t have been possible without him. Chris, since I can’t pay you, here is a shameless plug - Go to this website for the Waye Family - Missionaries to the British Isles - and assist them financially or prayerfully.

I also want to thank Tyler Payne for being my go to GoPro guy. I was able to get my hands on the new Hero2 from GoPro and got some awesome action shots. Adding the GoPro camera to the mix made the highlight videos a lot more entertaining. With all of the media that we got, it was difficult to choose which shots and clips to use. Really, that’s not a bad problem to have.

Finally, I wanted to give a shoutout to my uncle, J Hardee of Hardee Imaginations Photography. He and his photo assistants are also running around like crazy during the event, trying to get that perfect picture. I didn’t think he could outdo the pictures from the War event from last year, but he just might have done it! He took a ton of pics and you can see them on his website Here.

The War at Victory is really a giant undertaking. There are long hours spent in preparation, presentation, and post War cleanup. It took me over a week to recover. Wow! I can’t wait til next year!

It is hard to believe but The War at Victory 2012 has been over for almost a week. Actually, I am still in the recovery process, haha! The War this year was an obvious success because there were lives changed and challenged just like every other year. But from a design and media standpoint I want the War to succeed as well. There is a lot of work put in and I want the event to look good. There was so much that went on I wanted to share, that I decided to break it up into 2 blog posts. In the first I will talk about the website, and then the video in the second. If you are unfamiliar with The War at Victory, my last blog HERE will fill you in, or visit the site HERE.

The plan for the website used for the war is very simple. We get tons of video and pics during the event, and we want to make as much as we can available online as soon as possible. It also serves as a great reference point for the teams scores, information, and special online challenges. Last year, I built a basic setup for the event with a gallery for pics and vids and a homepage which showed the score. This year I wanted to really incorporate the “Scoreboard” and make it look real. Considering I am a web design Novice! Let me put it simply, the 2012 War at Victory website is probably one of the coolest thing that I have ever been able to design!

After watching SportsCenter and Google searching baseball stadiums I decided to try and create the look of a digital scoreboard. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really find what I was looking for so I tried sketching out some ideas. I put together a regular rectangular display frame with images inside. Then I incorporated a bunch of dots to overlay the images and give sort of a LED display feel to the viewer. Once I built and previewed a slideshow to be used on the website homepage, I knew I was headed in the right direction.

I continued to play around with the LED look and used the same effect to add a large Victory Baptist Church sign hovering over the scoreboard display. Now, the scoreboard really looked like something you would see in a stadium.

Eventually I decided to try to incorporate the lights effect on the website menu as well. I was really happy the way it all turned out.

That being said, a website that no one visits is worthless no matter how cool it looks. This year I was able to keep track of some traffic statistics for the site and the numbers were very encouraging. We averaged a little over 100 teenagers at the event each night. Over the course of the 3 Day event the website saw about 400 visits, with around 1000 page views! Considering the updated content was only on 2 pages, the Home page and Gallery page, I think those numbers were very good. Not only did we get visitors to browse, but we got them to come back again and again

The numbers on the War videos that we did were even more staggering. I will talk more about these in my next post, but here are the numbers as of today. You can check them out on the site HERE.

The War at Victory is officially here. Check out the website and some of the sights and sounds we have seen so far on the Gallery page. This website homepage is probably the single most awesome graphic design I have ever worked on. I hope the kids like it. I will post an update at the end to share how everything went. As you can tell by the preview video here and those on the website, I have recently become addicted to time lapses. I will probably share more in the future on that as well. It’s so easy to do with spectacular results. I'm learning something new every time I do one. You can make anything look interesting. Who would have guessed that Loganville could be a photography hot spot. haha!
